Register a server and install the Safenix agent

Register a systemd-based Linux server, install its Safenix agent, and verify that the first backup is protecting data.

Register the server in the Safenix dashboard, run the generated installation command as root, and verify that the server reaches the Protected state.

Before you start

  • Use a Linux server that uses systemd.
  • Have root or sudo access. The installation command must be executed as root.
  • Ensure that the server can reach the internet for outgoing connections. You do not need to open an incoming port: the agent contacts Safenix, never the other way around.

Register the server and install the agent

  1. In the Safenix dashboard, open Servers.

  2. In What should be backed up on this server?, review the paths to protect. The default proposal is:

    /etc,/home,/root,/srv,/opt,/var/www

These locations normally contain data that a server cannot recover simply by being reinstalled. Add other paths by separating them with commas, or remove paths that you do not need to protect.

  3. Click Register a new server. Safenix generates a complete installation command containing the server identifier and its token.

  4. Copy the generated command and execute it on the server as root.

The command downloads the Safenix agent, verifies its signature, creates a dedicated service user, writes the configuration, and starts the service. The first backup starts immediately.

Save the encryption password

Before leaving the installation screen, save the encryption password in a location independent of the protected server. The password is generated on the server during installation and shown only once. Safenix never receives it.

Without this password, the backups cannot be read, and nobody can recover the password for you.

Keep the registration token

The token is also shown only once. If you reload the page before copying it, you must register a new server.

MySQL or MariaDB

A MySQL or MariaDB database is not protected by copying its files. Configure database protection separately in the same screen, under This server has a MySQL or MariaDB database.

Verify the installation

Within a few minutes of the first backup, confirm that the server appears in the server list with the status Protected and that the protected-data size is shown.
